Fire Commissioner, active firefighter, Ex-Chief Michael J. Maher celebrates his 50 years of service written by SJB, 09.15.2012
Ex-Chief Michael Maher was honored during the 2012 Glen Cove Fire Department Inspection, receiving citations from Governer Andrew Cuomo, Senetor Carl Marcellino, County Executive Ed Mangano, Assemblymember Charles Lavine, Mayor Ralph Suozzi and the City Council Members.

A poignant Citation from the Mayor reads:

City of Glen Cove Citation

Whereas
: The City of Glen Cove is honored to recognize individuals whose dedication to community goes beyond expectation.  Today it is my sincere pleasure to present this citation to Fire Commissioner and Ex-Chief Michael J. Maher for his fifty years of dedicated and honorable service to the Glen Cove Volunteer Fire Department; and

Whereas: During his 50 years with the Glen Cove Volunteer Fire Department, Ex-Chief Maher has served in many capacities.  He joined the department as a member of Engine & Hose Company No. 4 in May 1962 and quickly climbed the ladder from 2nd Lieutenant to 1st Lieutenant and finally to the prestigious rank of Captain in 1968.  He served the department as Recording Secretary in 1972 and from 1978 to 1985 rose through the ranks from 3rd Assistant to 2nd Assistant to 1st Assistant and finally to Chief of the Department; and

Whereas: Ex-Chief Maher has distinguished himself as a leader in the positions of President of the 5th Battalion Chiefs from 2005 to 2006 and as a Fire Commissioner from 2010 to present.  He has received numerous awards for his service, including the Fireman of the Year Award in 1981 and Administrative Firefighter of the Year in 1997.  He has also been recognized for responding to the Avianca Air Crash in 1990 and the Nor'easter in 1992.  He received a Department Citation for the 167 Glen Cove Avenue fire in 1993 and the Suffolk County Wild Fires in 1995; and

Whereas: For the past 50 years Michael J. Maher has  always responded to the call of duty, continues to be an active member on many committees and is a dedicated and respected member of the Glen Cove Volunteer Fire Department.
